Social Support Improves Diabetes

What you should do next when you get diagnosed with T2D?

Maybe you’ve just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and you’re wondering what’s next? This diagnosis can feel daunting, just a quick google search will show that there is endless information out there about diabetes. The sheer amount of information is overwhelming and now your digging through the data, which is both good and bad. What would be really beneficial would be a support group. A place where you can openly talk about your thoughts and concerns. With COVID-19 and social distancing in the equation, this social network would need to be virtual and luckily there is DMP-The Diabetes App.

Social support has been documented and proven through studies to help improve the behavioral and psychological health outcomes of people with T2D. According to a study published in the US National Library of Medicine, “Informational support, especially guidance and feedback, plays a relatively important role.” However, finding trustworthy information can be challenging and this is where DMP comes in.

What does DMP do?

DMP offers a platform for all those with diabetes, regardless of which type you are or where you are in your diabetic journey. Have a question or concern? Post it on the app under “All Types” and I’m sure there is someone who can offer advice and support. Maybe you need to tell your story and get that weight off your chest? There is a section for that as well called “Share your Story”. This is a great place to read through other people’s diabetic journey and connect. DMP also offers support in the form of resources. You can also access the “Find Professionals” section on the app and connect with experts in the field.

Humans are social creatures, we crave inclusivity and desire connection. Social groups play a big role in our society and lifestyle, and have been proven to improve outcomes across all fields. If you are diabetic and looking for a safe place to connect with other diabetics, I encourage you to download the DMP app and give the social network a try! Explore all the pages, tune into a livestream, read through the forums, and lastly make sure to reach out to others!
